How DevOps affect Internet of Things

IoT made easy with DevOps – Part 2

Concerns

The reason why IoT has taken off is due to the security concerns of data leak from the devices, the point of entry of devices and sensors are quite vulnerable. The data is exposed to threats from people and organizations as well. Some of the examples are that of a thermostat, the data transmitted back to company contained a user’s zip code. Feeds from security cameras were transmitted without any encryption. One could argue about who must be responsible for these lapses in security, if tech companies want an IoT which could be good news for everyone involved, they have to take responsibility for improving the security all around.

Practicality

This where DevOps can help, the security testing tools associated with DevOps can tackle the security issues with IoT. With the continuous integration, DevOps can assure that IoT application conforms to the DevOps standards of security. With DevOps, security updates will also impact the sensors and any and all points of entry and exit of data. Deployment is more tricky with IoT devices, devices need to be online when the changes are being deployed. The software and hardware need to be in sync to all future updates without affecting the normal operations of the device itself.

Future With DevOps

While the DevOps engineer needs to worry how the hardware part of the device does not get affected, as an example if a TV is being updated from the Android or iOS device, the updates also need to be integrated into the TV as well, if need be while the TV is operational. The integration needs to be perfect with both handheld device as well as the IoT device. Even while these are just the early days of IoT, given the sheer number of connections to be made for this to be practical, one must be very optimistic about the role of DevOps in IoT. There will be future where it will impossible to talk about IoT without DevOps
