Amazon Web Services Introduces New Cloud Region In The UAE

Amazon Web Services after starting its operations in Bahrain in 2019, has now established full-scale operations in the United Arab Emirates, making it the second region in the Middle East.

According to the company “The AWS Region is now open in the United Arab Emirates. “The official name is Middle East (UAE) and the API name is central-1. It can now be used to deploy workloads and store data in the United Arab Emirates.”

The site was first announced in 2021 and was expected to go live in the first half of 2022. Three Availability Zones are available in the Middle East (UAE) region to reliably distribute applications among various data centers. Each Availability Zone is a completely isolated partition of AWS infrastructure, containing one or more data centers.

The company did not specify where the data centers will be located in the new region. Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS said, “AWS is committed to helping customers in the United Arab Emirates to deploy innovative cloud technologies and achieve the highest levels of security, availability, and resilience”.

“The opening of the AWS Middle East (UAE) Region is a significant milestone for Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a whole, reflecting our efforts to generate opportunities for all,” said His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development. “It strengthens Abu Dhabi’s commitment to positioning itself as a leading digital economy by leveraging cutting-edge technology to support business growth. The enhanced cloud capabilities enabled by AWS is expected to generate significant advantages and efficiencies that can propel businesses to success and realize major economic benefits for the country.”

This is the second region to open in the Middle East, following the opening in Bahrain. The company is also exploring other areas in Israel.

Developers, startups, entrepreneurs, as well as businesses, educational institutions, and AWS Managed service providers will have more opportunities to run applications and provide services to end users in data centers in the United Arab Emirates using AWS technology advances to drive innovation.

Availability Zones are in separate geographic locations far enough apart to minimize the risk of an event affecting regional availability, but close enough to provide business continuity for applications that require rapid failover and backups. This allows you to run production applications with greater availability, AWS cloud migration, fault tolerance, and scalability than is possible in a data center.

AWS estimates that planned spending on building and operating the new territories by 2036 will invest $5 billion (20 billion dirhams) in the local economy and support an average of nearly 6,000 full-time third-party jobs and AWS Consulting Services per year.

These jobs will be a component of the UAE’s AWS supply chain, which also includes jobs in the broader economy, engineering, construction, facility maintenance, and telecommunications. Over the next 15 years, the UAE’s GDP is anticipated to increase by about US$11 billion (AED41 billion) as a result of the construction and operations of AWS infrastructure in the UAE.
