When IT industries saw the rise of cloud computing, they realized that it was the future of technology, data processing and business. Although the de facto standard in popular cloud computing was introduced by Amazon AWS in 2006, it remained as the global leader, and still remains, rival cloud platforms were introduced by competitors mainly Microsoft called Azure. When both Azure and AWS continued to dominate the cloud market, it was the time that the tech giant Google introduced something to rival the competitors and to embrace cloud technology. Thus, the Google Cloud Platform was introduced.
Currently, Google cloud platform is among the top three major players besides Azure and AWS in the cloud industry. With newer technologies, all three of them has introduced different features to make the operation of clouds much easier for the end users and organisations for running their business and data processing.
The Platform
The cloud service platform or CSP was introduced last year by Google, It is currently available in beta stages as of February 20, 2019. When compared to alternatives like the Azure Stack from Microsoft and AWS Outposts, Google’s CSP has a different approach to on-premises deployments. Since the other two focus on the pre-configured combinations of hardware and software, the Google’s CSP is a Kubernetes based platform that uses the Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) which allows organisations to run applications in standardized packaged unit software called containers, either in on-premise data centres or in the Google Cloud platform. Shifting between the two is now much easier.
Kubernetes is an open-source container orchestration system that was originally built by Google and is currently managed by Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Usually, organisations are generally hesitant about moving their data resources to the cloud because of many reasons, particularly security and always tend to prefer to hybrid cloud approach that offers the security of using a private cloud for sensitive data and public cloud for other routine purposes.
Therefore, introducing a move like this was a recognition of this dilemma faced by enterprises. CSP is all about embracing the hybrid cloud model, where organizations have cloud assets both in the public cloud and private cloud (on-premises), thus providing the freedom of choice for the most appropriate deployment model.
