Kubernetes based hybrid cloud: Merits and Demerits

Kubernetes consulting services in India growing on a large scale as many companies are flying to hybrid cloud. There are two kinds of hybrid cloud platforms.  The first is based on Kubernetes and the latter based on other open-source platforms. You have to decide whether to use Kubernetes in building architecture in the following realms.

  • On-premises server
  • Colocated infrastructure with a public cloud
Hybrid cloud and Kubernetes

Kubernetes is an open-source platform that deals with containerized workloads and services. It is more than a hybrid cloud platform. Supporting these hybrid cloud architectures is not the primary concern of Kubernetes. A Kubernetes service provider has all tools and support to the large growing ecosystem of the platform.

It provides a consistent way to manage and deploy applications no matter the infrastructure. It can abstract the underneath infrastructure of the application environment. Deployment in Kubernetes application is the same as others. It does not make much difference and can do it in a spare laptop, public cloud, colocation data center. One of the greatest merits is, Kubernetes can manage the application running of unique infrastructure alongside offer seamless deployment. Even, your applications and server can reside anywhere like a public cloud or a colocation facility. Understanding this, some companies have taken the expertise of Kubernetes service providers.

Kubernetes-based hybrid platforms

Adept Kubernetes service provider helps companies like Google Anthos, VMWare’s use Kubernetes first approach to hybrid cloud. Amazon’s Elastic Kubernetes service is another example of a hybrid cloud platform; it can operate on-prem clusters running in various infrastructure. Likewise, Amazon’s main hybrid solution “ AWS Outposts” delivers extended hybrid services. Whereas, EKS supports multiple environments for the deployment of containerized applications. These are the Kubernetes-based hybrid platforms.

Other platforms such as Azure Rack, Azure Stack, AWS Outposts make use of other technologies for a hybrid cloud solution. They can support deployments through hybrid architecture but never use Kubernetes as a core layer of a hybrid environment.

When to call a Kubernetes service provider for choosing on Hybrid cloud?

That question depends upon a few variables. The Kubernetes approach to hybrid cloud is a better choice or not according to these variables. First of all, do you want to manage more workloads using Kubernetes rather than managing via public cloud standard tooling? The above platform like Tanzu and Anthos use it for managing everything. Kubernetes service provider’s expertise is not used by Azure Stack. They prefer native management tooling.

Secondly, the broadness of containerization of your applications. Of course, Kubernetes can manage virtual machines, containers, and VM. The one thing they are not as fast as containers when running. It is better to choose another hybrid cloud platform if you have VM workloads

Lastly, it is important to consider the platform’s efficiency, now it has gained popularity among companies. It might be a fad.
