The AWS Domination

Cloud computing is now a common term in technology. Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services over the internet. These services include storing, processing of data, monitoring, execution of applications and more. Almost all of the companies in the world are embracing the cloud to stay ahead in this digital era. The leading companies of cloud services currently are AWS by Amazon, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.

The interesting fact is that out of the three AWS dominates the cloud industry. As of September 2018, 64% of organisations globally use AWS for running their business. Amazon Web Services is not a single technology but is made up of different cloud computing products and services. AWS hosts popular websites like Netflix and Instagram.

So, what made AWS this much popular even though there were popular alternatives?

The launch and relaunch

One particular reason can be attributed to the experience. That’s right, The Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform was started in 2002, but its public service was first started in November 2004 with Simple Queue Service (SQS). After a series of updates, the Amazon AWS platform was relaunched officially on March 14, 2006. The Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) along with Simple Storage Services (S3) are the most two concepts of AWS.

With more than 15 years of experience provided with newer and improved cloud services with features implemented on security, scalability, deployment made AWS the preferred for organisations. Also, until the introduction of cloud platforms later on by Microsoft and Google, AWS was the major deal for cloud services.

Evolving platform

In order to keep up with newer standards, the technology must be constantly updated and evolved. AWS has done a pretty good job over the past 15 years. The most common dilemma for organisations is regarding the security of their data when using cloud services.

AWS is pretty much secure than an organisation hosting its own website or storage. AWS offers more control and customization, which are both essential to cloud security. Also, rather than keeping all data at a centralised location, AWS has multiple data centres all over the world which are continuously monitored and strictly maintained. The data centres and all the data contained therein are safe from intrusions and, with Amazon’s experience in cloud services, any sort of potential attacks can be quickly identified and easily remedied.

This ensures reliability such that failure of a particular data centre doesn’t affect the remaining servers. The biggest feature of cloud services is that we only need to pay on the basis of usage. AWS normally charges on an hourly basis whereas Azure and Google charge per minute.

Conclusion

AWS is the biggest and most successful cloud technology in the world. With more than a decade of experience in providing cloud services for different purposes, it has been the most preferred cloud service for organisations.
